Microsoft has just released Singularity as shared source (or whatever they
choose to call "open" in attempt to subvert accepted definitions). This means
that their attempt to start from scratch (it started several years back and
quite secretly so) wasn't quite so fruitful.
Microsoft is more interested at the moment in taxing its competition, using
software patents. It knows it's losing, so it's evolving (devolving rather) to
become a leech, a troll.
It's idiots (pardon the strong word) like Novell and Xandros that take the
money and enable this to become a /partial/ reality. Earlier today I read a
good analysis from a good authority which says Red Hat will never cave,
especially after the taxoperability program (2 weeks ago). Microsoft made a
mistake, shot itself in the foot, and escaped no EU fines (for which it did
this charade in the first place).
I think Microsoft is in trouble. Not because of Apple. Not because of the EU.
Not because of the recession. Why? Ask Ballmer. He'll gladly tell you:

| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have

Linux makes it impossible for Microsoft to crack down on copyrights
infringement of Windows and Office. OpenOffice.org also... Wine is a killer to
them.
