Linux Shootout: 7 Desktop Distros Compared
,----[ Quote ]
| We tested openSUSE, Ubuntu 8.4, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva Linux One, Fedora,
| SimplyMEPIS, and CentOS 5.1. All performed well, and each had at least one
| truly outstanding feature.
|
| [...]
|
| As predictable as this may sound, Ubuntu 8.4 remains one of the best desktop
| distributions for many good reasons: it works with almost any hardware you
| throw at it, and has tons of features for both existing Linux users and
| prospective converts from Windows. openSUSE fared better on desktops than
| notebooks, but has a lot of organizational ideas in its interface that I'd
| like to see expanded on in the next release.
|
| Fedora and CentOS may have both been derived from a common source but were
| dissimilar enough to be considered separately: Fedora recognized a slightly
| broader range of hardware, and CentOS seems a bit friendlier to newcomers and
| includes a broader spate of preinstalled administrative apps. Finally,
| Mandriva and its cousins -- SimplyMEPIS and PCLinuxOS -- all get major points
| for ease of administration, although each one organizes things somewhat
| differently. What you expect to find in one, you may find in a totally
| different place in the other two.

Linux is ready, but consumers are not
,----[ Quote ]
| Haff said a window of opportunity for Linux ironically may lie in the demise
| of the desktop OS. "If you believe in the emergence of cloud computing, then
| the whole concept of running applications on the desktop starts to go away.
| This may well mean that Linux gets more interesting for client devices
| because now native applications do not matter so much," he said.
|
| Colin Sng, a systems engineer in a Singapore-based firm, who uses Windows,
| Mac and Linux OSes for work and at home, said the technology is ready, but
| obstacles lie mostly with the consumer.

| Also in the earlier reports, Andrews observed that the need for RTOS source
| code was "one of the reasons that proprietary RTOSes created in-house for a
| specific system have long been popular, and now it's a primary motivating
| factor in the adoption of Embedded Linux."
|
| The now completed survey results are said to include "expert analysis" from
| Ann Thryft, a 20-year industry veteran. The report includes chapters on
| platforms, processors, tools, languages, security, target devices, mobile
| development, and of course, Linux.

Linux kernel maintainer calls for embedded specialist
,----[ Quote ]
| The maintainer of Linux 2.6 has called for a full-time,
| architecture-independent "embedded maintainer." Speaking at a CELF's fourth
| annual Embedded Linux Conference, Morton also told embedded developers how to
| select a kernel, get support from the kernel community, and decide whether to
| submit code to mainline.

Embedded developers and kernel hackers: can they work together?
,----[ Quote ]
| In many ways, Andrew Morton's keynote set the tone for this year's Embedded
| Linux Conference (ELC) by describing the ways that embedded companies and
| developers can work with the kernel community in a way that will be "mutually
| beneficial". Morton provided reasons, from a purely economic standpoint, why
| it makes sense for companies to get their code into the mainline kernel. He
| also provided concrete suggestions on how to make that happen. The theme of
| the conference seemed to be "working with the community" and Morton's speech
| provided an excellent example of how and why to do just that.

| A key mention goes to Richard Stallman, Founder of GNU Project and Free

| wouldn't have been possible without Stallman's vision of a free software
