One reason why Linux fits in the real world better
,----[ Quote ]
| Now, imagine this problem on a Windows based system which is assigned to an
| important task. Lets for instance take something simple, a supermarket crash
| register (A system simple enough to build on any platform). You have three
| cash registers working in a medium sized supermarket. There is a constant
| flow of customers, usually taking up all three registers. One of the
| registers has a RAM problem one morning and the register needs to be sent to
| repair. This leaves 2 cash registers working, making up the flow of customers
| for the malfunctioning register. The two lines get bigger and bigger as the
| two remaining registers struggle to keep up with the constant flow. Customer
| satisfaction goes down, the business suffers. The broken register may only
| arrive a few days later, or the crew that comes to repair might not have
| extra ram with them. The business continues to suffer for the next few days.
|
| Now, imagine this situation, only running on Linux. The register has a
| problem with the RAM, but the Linux kernel simply ignores the problem. The
| register stays working, the lines don't get long, and customer satisfaction
| stays up.

A more urgent reason for departure from Windows is botnets.
