Minds Meet to Mull Linux Marketing
,----[ Quote ]
| Do you guys know anything about Linux?
|
| We just looked at each other and smiled.
|
| "Yeah, a little...what do you want to know?"
|
| Turns out the fella recently obtained a Linux Live CD and was fascinated by
| it. He could do so much with it...things that Windows wouldn't dream of
| allowing him to do. He stated that it was a huge relief not to have to worry
| about constant patches and updates and viruses. The fact that it took hours
| to install a new Windows system with all the patches was enough to make the
| learning curve acceptable.
|
| One guy in a parking lot as the sun began to set on Austin Texas...he wanted
| to know about Linux.

The Vista SP1 saga: the best ad for Mac and Linux yet?
,----[ Quote ]
| But really, Apple and Linux people should be jumping over the moon at these
| continual, comedic, tragic, shambolic stuff ups by Microsoft.
|
| Microsoft is being their own worst enemy here, and they shouldn’t be
| surprised if this whole affair convinces quite a few people yet to upgrade to
| Vista to just forget it, and either go with a Mac, give one of the flavours
| of Linux a try, or go back to using an abacus.

|
| Don’t be surprised if plenty more people suddenly find themselves tipped over
| the edge from your actions – and living a Microsoft-free life.

Linux Doesn't Need Slick Marketing
,----[ Quote ]
| It is often said that Linux and FOSS need some slick marketing. But do they?
| I think this is another example of wanting to copy the wrong things, like
| EULAs and activation keys. The popular Apple vs. PC commercials, so beloved
| of so many, to me are "Two Dweebs Meet." They deserve each other. Microsoft's
| Bill and Jerry commercials are clever and a radical departure from their
| traditional amazingly inept and stupid TV commercials (Lordamercy, what
| genius gave the OK to those pervy guys in blue butterfly suits?), but they're
| still advertising dung polish.

Why Ubuntu 8.04 needs better marketing
,----[ Quote ]
| Ubuntu’s goal is to be the most popular desktop OS for humans. But new
| versions of Ubuntu, like most Linux distros, are still marketed towards Linux
| geeks. They’re concerned with technology, trumpeting version numbers and
| drowning out the actual things you can do with their software.
|
| We’re picking on Ubuntu specifically because it has higher goals than most
| distros - it’s Linux for human beings, not Linux for hackers. Unfortunately,
| the release announcements have forgotten what humans care primarily about:
| themselves.

Red Hat Preps Desktop Blitz, Regional Events

Importance of Grassroots Marketing Efforts for FOSS
,----[ Quote ]
| Part of the problem is familiarity. People have never heard the terms "Linux"
| or "Free/Open Source Software". Despite word-of-mouth advertsing being the
| best means of advertising, many people still don't know what FOSS or
| GNU/Linux is. I meet them everyday. I know at least one man who literally
| thought Microsoft IS computing. In other words, he thought Microsoft was the
| only company out there doing software. It's true, he is not among the most
| knowledgeable users. Still, the Microsoft brand is simply that pervasive.
| What the FOSS community needs is the pervasive brand recognition that will
| help improve the word-of-mouth evangelists in the field become more
| effective.

The last Linux adoption barrier is marketing
,----[ Quote ]
| IBM gave us the Linux boy” ads. Like all IBM ads, they are convoluted and
| make little sense. Frankly, those ads would have been better suited for
| Wikipedia. A little boy swiftly absorbing the wisdom, advice, and information
| of the ages? Yeah, Wikipedia ad, but at the end of the ad, I would have no
| idea what Linux is.

GNU/Linux on the desktop: a modest business proposal
,----[ Quote ]
| GNU/Linux is a great project, with fantastic underlying technology,
| but its name conjures up images of geek humor, stuffy Unix-like
| machines from a 1970s university, and--worst of all--servers. Not
| desktops. Therefore, I propose we set up a business that will
| fork the kernel into a new project, let?s call it MegaOS, and
| install that onto a set of new machines, each branded with our
| corporate MegaOS logo.

[Opinion] Switch to Linux? No. Get a Mac Clone.
,----[ Quote ]
| I'm a marketing guy, and I look at everything in my world from a marketing

| people move in that direction.

| And to finish this article, Kudos to Linux. I get two reactions when
| people look at the desktop on my Laptop and Desktop. One is.. "Er.. is
| that a Mac?" and the other is "Why don't you just buy a Mac?". Well
| kudos is due, because I don't NEED to buy a Mac. I can get the Mac
| look and feel, which I like, and the massive productivity boost of
| the desktop cube ( and enjoyable extras ) even on my three year
| old HP laptop.

IBM updates Power server, Linux marketing
,----[ Quote ]
| To that end, IBM also plans to announce a marketing program at
| the Open Solutions Summit, an open-source conference in New York.
| The plan, a new element to its "migration factory," is intended
| to woo customers using Linux on x86 servers running the popular
| "LAMP" stack of Web server software--Linux, the Apache Web server,
| the MySQL database and the PHP scripting language to create Web
| pages on the fly.

Open Source, Linux and the importance of marketing and public perception
,----[ Quote ]
| Almost all of our interviewees found Ubuntu Linux easy to use (no
| surprises there). Most of them were truly astonished as to how much
| punch Ubuntu packs in a single CD. A large portion of the interviewees
| were actually willing to try it, especially if the BSA threatened to crack
| their businesses down (that they were using pirated software is, of
| course, not a surprise as well). Just a single person, who seemed to hate
| computers, did not find anything to like about Ubuntu (and this person
| fits the reproductive learning profile -- she memorized procedures instead
| of learning concepts about computer usage).
