Mozilla CTO Sees an Upside to the Browser Wars

,----[ Quote ]
| "The future of the Web is bright," Eich told InternetNews.com. "We talk about
| things like Silverlight and Adobe AIR being a threat to the open Web but they
| won't succeed in displacing the reach of the Web. Competition is going strong
| in the Web browser market and I think that will bring them all up towards
| parity and keep them evolving in ways developers want."

Ogg audio/video for the Web is coming. That was among the few excuses to use
blobs, which SVG+JS/Ajax make obsolete.

The Open Web: A New Old Meme

,----[ Quote ]
| Against that background, it will be interesting to see how this latest
| instantiation of the Open Web meme pans out. Certainly, if it helps genuinely
| useful new open specifications to be formulated as successfully as the Apache
| Software Foundation has managed to nurture really handy new open source
| projects, we will all have much to be grateful for.

Microsoft breaks IE8 interoperability promise

,----[ Quote ]
| This week, the promise was broken. It lasted less than six months. Now that
| Internet Explorer IE8 beta 2 is released, we know that many, if not most,
| pages viewed in IE8 will not be shown in standards mode by default. The dirty
| secret is buried deep down in the «Compatibility view» configuration panel,
| where the «Display intranet sites in Compatibility View» box is checked by
| default. Thus, by default, intranet pages are not viewed in standards mode.
