Review: Linux Mint 5 - KDE Edition

,----[ Quote ]
| Overall, I liked Mint 5 KDE, especially with the added speed and upgraded
| default non-compiz eyecandy. It's good and stable, and works well with
| everything I could throw at it from a new and normal user's collective
| standpoints. And it's easily shown again why Linux Mint has become my new
| number one favorite Linux distribution for new users, overtaking PcLinuxOS
| with a blast of gusto for the top spot on my list. It's most certainly worth
| checking out.

Arch Of The Penguins

,----[ Quote ]
| THERE are those Linux distributions which will install in a coffee break,
| with little intervention required from the user.
| And there are those which demand plentiful reading beforehand, a thorough
| knowledge of one's hardware and a calm, clear mind.
| Arch Linux 2008 falls into the latter category – and I love it.
| I have been using Linux for more than a decade now but have only recently got
| around to trying Arch.
| Arch is “a lightweight and flexible Linux distribution that tries to Keep It
| Simple”, according to the website, but new Linux users take note: “Simple” is
| not the same as “Easy”.

Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna KDE Community Edition

,----[ Quote ]
| You see I've always looked upon Mint with confusion; as a derivative of
| Ubuntu I never quite understood why it existed. Sure there was a time where
| preloading codecs and software was a desirable thing but now days everyone
| has tackled that problem in different ways - thus making "out of the box"
| releases like Mint a little redundant. There are some really interesting
| things about Mint that deviate from that stereotype massively.

Release Notes for Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna KDE Community Edition, by Jamie Boo
Birse

,----[ Quote ]
| Daryna KDE is nearly as minty as the main edition now. The packages are
| (safely) upto date and the kernel is the Gutsy Gibbon kernel 2.6.22-14.

A Simple Arch Review

,----[ Quote ]
| In the end, I found I was perfectly happy to sacrifice a little of Debian’s
| legendary stability for Arch’s speed. But like all Linux distributions, Arch
| isn’t the right choice for everyone. I won’t tell you if you should be using
| Arch, but if you like what you’ve heard and don’t mind going a little deeper
| into Linux and seeing how it works, then perhaps Arch is the one for you.

Progress with Arch Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| It has been several weeks since I started playing with Arch Linux. I’ve two
| of my three systems running under this distro and figured it was worth
| posting at least a short blurb on my impressions and experience…
|
| [...]
|
| In short: so far, so good. At some point, unless I step into a massive hole
| somewhere along the lines, I will probably move my last (and primary) box
| over to Arch.

Arch Linux for the DIY Linux user

,----[ Quote ]
| Arch Linux is a distro designed for users who like to be in control of what
| apps are installed on their systems. Unlike other distros with similar
| objectives, Arch doesn't sacrifice ease of use completely. It uses BSD-style
| init scripts, which eases configuration tasks, and a dependency-resolving
| package manager that helps keep the system updated. All in all, Arch is a
| nice distro for users who wish to learn about Linux and mold their Linux
| systems without breaking into a sweat.

Arch Linux 2008.06: Overlord

,----[ Quote ]
| Arch is simple. It’s not easy at first, but it’s simple…and “simple” has the
| knack of becoming “easy” when you’re used to it. After the install, you end
| up with a system that has everything you want it to have, but nothing more.
| That means it’s light-weight, and fast, and unique, and very easy to
| maintain. After the initial hours of configuration, there’s not much left to
| be done. Upgrade the system every day. Sit back. Relax. Enjoy. I know I will.

ReviewLinux.Com: First Look Linux Mint 4.0 KDE

,----[ Quote ]
| Thought I would take a quick look at the latest release of Linux Mint.  Linux
| Mint 4.0 KDE is just under 1.0 gig and now has to be placed on a DVD.  The
| install process was easy and smooth.  The LiveDVD works fine also but I
| decided to install it to my hard drive and take a few screenshots for your
| enjoyment.

Linux Mint issues second KDE version test

,----[ Quote ]
| The Linux Mint team this week made available the second release candidate
| of its Ubuntu-based Linux Mint 2.2, KDE edition. The release carries
| a 2.6.17 kernel (same as the most recent GNOME desktop version, which
| came out a week ago) along with several important improvements,
| according to the project.

Review: Linux Mint 2.2 Beta 020 "Bianca KDE Edition"

,----[ Quote ]
| While it is always nice to have another Linux distribution, because
| choice is good, I didn't see any compelling reason to use Linux Mint
| over the Ubuntu which it is based off of. The look is slightly
| different, with some different configuration options here and there.
| I can't really say it offers anything special over Ubuntu, but you never
| know, there are no doubt future improvements that the Linux Mint team
| will make. Hopefully they fix the video driver issue so I can try it
| out on my desktop.

Linux Mint "Bianca" KDE Edition Beta 020: A Small Review

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distro whose goal in life, per its
| website, "is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable
| GNU/Linux desktop distribution." The developers have released
| both GNOME-based and KDE-based versions in the past, and their
| latest version, v2.2 "Bianca," is already final in its GNOME
| incarnation. They just released a beta version of "Bianca KDE
| Edition" using KDE v3.5.6. The final version is to be released
| later this month.

Arch Linux: Popular KISS distro [page 2]

,----[ Quote ]
| How many developers are behind Arch? Do you see this number increase in the
| future?
|
| According to this page we have 27 developers. Everyone does different things.
| While I do see our numbers increasing in the future, I think that will only
| come after fully figuring out what everyone's job is, and what holes we have
| to plug.

Arch Linux on OLPC XO-1

,----[ Quote ]
| This is the part where I eat my own words. I didn’t think it possible, but it
| works. The Geode is an i586, and logic says that a system tuned to the 686 —
| which regularly resisted all efforts to run or even boot on K6-series
| machines for me — seems quite happy to plunk along on my XO-1. See for
| yourself.

Arch Linux - Is this really a geek's distro?

,----[ Quote ]
| Arch Linux is not at all a geek's distribution as I have not found any
| installation, configuring problems. All it takes is you have to make use of
| the well documented wiki and user forums. Arch may not be suitable for the
| first time Linux user but if you had already installed and used a Linux
| variant then I highly recommend trying arch.

Arch 2007.08-2 Review

,----[ Quote ]
| Acrh Linux is lean, wicked and it allows all types to possibilities. It
| allows the user to custom tailor the distribution as per his/her taste. It
| has a great package manager. A package manager that is being used by lot of
| other distributions like frugalware, archie and faun. But I am unable the
| gauze the advantages pacman provides over apt-get.

Distros Don’t Drive Development

,----[ Quote ]
| Lots of press and people focus on Linux distributions when they check out
| what happens in Linux land. This and that distro come in new releases and
| they offer this and that brand new feature. This is also true of the many
| linux podcasts. They give credit to distros for new things that pop up.

Arch Linux Review

,----[ Quote ]
| I happen to believe that Arch is an excellent flavor of Linux that hasn't got
| the share of publicity and attention if deserves from the community yet.
|
| [...]
|
| As I've said before I am a rather old Linux user, so I didn't expect to get
| easily impressed from a distro. Well guess what, I am! Arch is an excellent
| distribution I'd recommend to just about everyone that likes to get his hands
| dirty and has at least some experience in Linux.
| It keeps the simple methodology that Slackware has but presents it in a more
| easy, decent way. It is not a distro for absolute beginners, it does not
| promise a dozen features "out of the box" but once you get it rolling you'll
| be rewarded with an amazing distro. Trust me you'll love "the Arch way"!

Review: Arch Linux 0.8 Voodoo x86_64

,----[ Quote ]

Review: Arch64, Archlinux for 64bit processors

,----[ Quote ]
| I highly recommend Arch64. If you are looking for a great 64bit system
| and don't mind getting your hands dirty, this is the system for you. You
| only need a fast connection and some time. Pacman is the best package
| manager out there. ABS gives you freedom to create your own packages
| or customize packages for your machine.

Arch Linux 0.7.2 (Gimmick) Review

,----[ Quote ]
| I have finally found a distribution that fits all of my needs and
| won't hold my hand. Editing files is simple and educational as you
| learn how the system works. For the speed, stability, and the
| simplicity this distribution offers, it is no wonder that Arch is
| quickly becoming home for most power users as well as users who are
| willing to learn Linux.

Watching the Evolution of Arch Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| In closing, I would like to applaud the Arch Linux developer team for
| their efforts. They've done a great job so far and of course, they still
| have a long way in front of them too.
|
| If you like a speedy Linux, easy to learn and operate and you don't
| afraid of the command line, give Arch Linux a shot today. Its main
| ISO with X support is just 500 MBs (and then you built it from there
| adding more packages as you go along).
