[News] Lotus Symphony Upgrades to OOo Codebase; More ODF Progress

Hash: SHA1

Symphony Thursday: Team Blog on Document Interoperability

,----[ Quote ]
| The move of Lotus Symphony to the OpenOffice.org 3 code base, and more
| importantly, having Lotus Symphony based on the current OpenOffice.org code
| trunk going forward, is the first step. We will see more pressure for full
| ODF and OOXML support, not the current OpenOffice.org implementation of ODF
| or the Office 2007 file formats, over the next 12 to 18 months. We as
| consumers of these products must demand full support of the file format - not
| the custom implementations out there today.

,----[ Quote ]
| Croatia's biggest annual open source and open systems event (DORS/CLUC) will
| feature a presentation on ODF (by Bart Hanssens, Fedict) and a talk on
| OpenOffice.org (by Goran Rakić, OpenOffice.org Serbia)

Introducing Planet ODF

,----[ Quote ]
| I have an early Document Freedom Day present for you. Planet ODF is a feed
| aggregator based on Sam Ruby's Planet Venus, which itself is a refactoring of
| Planet 2.0.

ODF Alliance Award Winners Announced

,----[ Quote ]
| The OpenDocument Format (ODF) Alliance today recognized Vitorio Furusho from
| Parana, Brazil and Anvar Sadath from Kerala, India for their contributions to
| ODF community development and education.

Fort Worth legislator pushes for open format in state documents

,----[ Quote ]
| In recent years, a host of free programs using an open-source format called
| OpenDocument have emerged that allow users to create and edit office
| documents. Popular ones include OpenOffice.org and Google Docs, both of which
| can open files in most Microsoft Office formats.

Open Source, Open Standards and Re-Use: UK Government Policy

,----[ Quote ]
| The UK Government has made it clear that Open Source and Open Standards, with
| a focus on re-use of software development and deployment, is to clearly and
| unequivocably be part of the decision-making for UK Government I.T.
| procurement and contracting. Also part of the policy is a clear committment
| to engage with the Free Software community and to actively encourage the
| development of "Government-Class" Free Software products.

The 21st ODF Toolkit Scenario

,----[ Quote ]
| Back in 2006 I gave a short in talk at a KDE conference in Dublin on the
| topic of "A Standard ODF Object Model", essentially laying out my thoughts on
| why we needed an "ODF Toolkit". As part of that presentation I listed "20
| Prototypical App Dev Scenarios", my attempt to enumerate all the fundamental
| patterns of use for ODF. I did a blog post on this list later that year.
