I wonder if they paid the micoshaft tax by paying money to Novel who
in turn are obliged to itemise what the payments are for.

If it turns out money has been paid for a 'Linux license' from Novel
then all hell could break loose. Shuttle, Novel and micoshaft could face
legal action for violation of GPL.
