[News] Major New Release of RPM

Hash: SHA1

RPM 4.6.0 released

,----[ Quote ]
| Nine months after the last release, the RPM.org developers have announced RPM
| 4.6.0, a new version of the RPM Package Manager, one of the main packaging
| formats for many Linux distributions and part of the Linux Standard Base
| (LSB). One of the more important features of the RPM 4.6 release is that it
| is now based upon an cleaner and more maintainable codebase than RPM 4.4, and
| is being actively developed. For the average user, there should be very
| little change, apart from some queries being much faster and unsupported
| features being removed. The update contains many bug fixes and enhancements,
| including some long standing requests.

FreshRPMs and Livna Join Forces

,----[ Quote ]
| If you use Fedora and you want to be able to do useful things like play MP3s
| or DVDs you need to add an external repository like FreshRPMs or Livna.  This
| is because MP3 playback is covered by patents in the United States, libdecss
| may be illegal to distribute, and a license agreement is required to playback
| DVDs.  Ever since I tried Debian, I liked their way of doing things.  The
| nonfree packages are in the official repos; they’re just disabled by default.

Red Hat Fedora Claims It's the Leader in Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Red Hat's Fedora community Linux distribution has now tallied its user base,
| and it's a number that on the surface would make it the largest installed
| base of any Linux distribution, with at least 9.5 million users and possibly
| as many as 10.5 million.

RPM Fusion is now Available

,----[ Quote ]
| The RPM Fusion team is proud to announce the public availability of
| our repositories that provide software which the Fedora project cannot
| provide as easy-to-install RPM packages.

RPM Fusion enters testing state

,----[ Quote ]
| RPM Fusion, a merge of several former Fedora 3rd party repositories providing
| licence/patent problematic packages, has entered the public testing state.
| Fedora Rawhide users can now start using it, and the brave among the Fedora 9
| and Fedora 8 users can also help testing.

What is the RPM Fusion project?

,----[ Quote ]
| Hans de Goede: We want to be a one stop place for Fedora add-on packages
| which cannot be in Fedora proper due to various issues. Currently we are a
| merger of the dribble, freshrpms and livna repositories, and we invite other
| repositories to join us.

The RPM Fusion Project

,----[ Quote ]
| We aim to provide support for all 'current' versions of Fedora including
| devel,
| for i386, ppc, ppc64 and x86_64.
| We hope to attract new Fedora packagers and many other 3rd party
| repositories.

RPM Fusion for Fedora

,----[ Quote ]
| Time will tell if RPM Fusion will live up to its own expectations and will be
| able to provide a consistent and fully working 3rd party repository for
| Fedora 9 or even Fedora 8.

First rpm.org-RPM version released

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently the first version of rpm.org’s RPM tool was released. While it is

Install .rpm Files in Debian and Ubuntu

,----[ Quote ]
| Some time you might find some applications are having only .rpm files but
| you want a .deb package for your debian,Ubuntu and other debian derived
| ditributions. If you can?t find .deb debian package in any of the
| debian, ubuntu repositories or elsewhere, you can use the alien
| package converter  to install the .rpm file.
| Alien is a program that converts between the rpm, dpkg, stampede slp,
| and slackware tgz file formats. If you want to use a package from
| another distribution than the one you have installed on your system, you
| can use alien to convert it to your preferred package format and install
| it.

| The Fedora Project has announced plans to revitalize RPM, the package
| manager used by many Linux distros.

The future of RPM

,----[ Quote ]
| We wanted to make sure those parties agreed that this was the right
| thing to do for their respective communities. We touched base with
| some of these people at the recent LSB conference, and the
| overwhelming community opinion there was in favor of what we are
| outlining here.
