Like many folks, I own laptops, not desktops. My main concern with an OS is
will it work with wireless. I don't mind working with programs to install
windows drivers, but would *prefer* not to have to think about it when I
install an OS. So - my wish list contains a single thing: a small OS with a
basic desktop that has wireless communication as a priority. Call it the
'old laptop' edition. ;)

Knoppix 4.0 CD edition. Throw it in, make sure everything works, install
win32 driver for wireless with nidwrapper if necessary (4.0 has
generally been good to me, even wit hthe weird Intel Pro2100B PCMCIA
cards), then install to HDD. Up and running on a KDE desktop from the
hard drive in under an hour. Then you can customise to your heart's
content. Right down to installing and configuring a new UI.
The best bit is, unless you're a packrat, you don't need to keep
everything that comes on the CD. You can update/upgrade/install from the
standard Debian repositories. Standard install takes a little over a
Gig, you can trim that to under 400MB without even trying, packing it
all in would require about 18GB for the whole shebang of what, 28,000
packages?
