Suite freedom: a review of GIMP 2.6.4

,----[ Quote ]
| Free, but high-end
|
| This is the first time that I'm reviewing GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation
| Program), and it's definitely long overdue. As the open-source image editor
| of choice, the feature list of GIMP 2.6 is very long, and despite its status
| as a free application, it's as feature-packed as any commercial application.
| GIMP is loaded with the up-to-date tools many demanding professionals need:
| Bézier path editing with brush stroking, tablet support, Heal Tool, alpha
| channels, multiple-undo History, area-averaged eyedropper, PSD file
| compatibility, and a wackload of other high-end tools that are impressive in
| their attention to detail.

Articles: The LXF Guide: OpenSolaris distros

| A few months ago we looked at OpenSolaris, Sun's effort to get the community
| involved in its Unix flavour. Now Susan Linton explores some of the spin-off
| projects that have popped up, including MilaX, Belenix and Nexenta...
|
| OpenSolaris is the much talked-about open source version of Sun's industrial
| strength operating system. It's a Unix derivative aimed at the same general
| demographic as Linux or the free BSDs: system administrators, developers, and
| desktop users. Under the guidance of Debian founder Ian Murdock, OpenSolaris
| has taken its place alongside Linux and the free BSDs as another viable
| alternative operating system, and has built up support for 12 languages. It
| offers commonly used software as found in Linux such as Gnome, Evolution,
| Pidgin and Firefox. In addition, OpenSolaris includes graphical config tools
| such as the Device Drivers utility and Package Management suite - the latter
| having a look and feel that's not alien to Synaptic users.

Gimp Keeps You Organized In 2009.

| If you're like most computer users, you probably have a digital camera and
| scanner.  So, you're saving a lot of images and photos on your computer.  In
| addition, there are probably some bits and pieces of photos that you store in
| an image library so you can incorporate it into a new design or other image.
|
| When I was using Windows, the graphics app I used had a built in image
| library.  I could drag and drop images and clippings into the library for
| future use.   The problem was, when I upgraded to a new computer and
| reinstalled the software, I had to move a specific folder within the Windows
| file system.  And the folder was always buried away some place. It took hours
| and a visit to the web to ask other users in order to locate it.  Worse still
| was if I ever reinstalled the program.  The reinstallation routine would
| overwrite the entire library.   If I didn't back it up, all those images were
| lost!

OpenSolaris 08.11 first impressions

,----[ Quote ]
| Either way, I can definitely see OpenSolaris becoming part of my
| desktop/server set up in some shape or form. Not least for Dtrace, which I've
| yet to have a proper play with.
|
| Anyway, OpenSolaris 08.11 is definitely well worth a look if you're a serial
| OS installer.

An exclusive interview with Martin Nordholts

,----[ Quote ]
| What can I say, if some other image editor surpasses GIMP
| in terms of features then so be it. I suspect though
| that once we have finished the work we are doing
| currently doing, GIMP will be very attractive to
| the people currently turning to dedicated programs
| for high-bit depth RAW processing for example.
| I find competition (if one can use that term) nothing but
| interesting.

Interview: Martin Nordholts, the GIMP

,----[ Quote ]
| High bit depth support, non-destructive editing
| (so called "effect layers") and colour management.
| Three hot topics in photography editing - that
| users have been waiting for for a long time now
| to appear in GIMP. Today Linux & Photography blog
| features an exclusive interview with Martin
| Nordholts, one of the core contributors to GIMP.
| Nordholts speaks about the current state of affairs,
| explains what is going on deep inside the GIMP (and
| GEGL) and also lifts a corner of the veil about what is to come.
