Akademy 2009 Technical Papers Published: Research And Innovation In The KDE
Community

,----[ Quote ]
| Over the last few years KDE has seen increased involvement of students and
| university researchers. While many universities still feel uneasy about
| working with Free Software, the open and welcoming attitude in the KDE
| community has already brought several scientific research projects to life. A
| prime example is of course the Nepomuk project, officially finished but still
| very much alive within the Free Software- and scientific communities.
| Furthermore, many involved contributors make use of scientific research
| papers while looking for inspiration to solve the more complex problems
| involved in writing software. The Free Software community also contributes in
| a practical way to science: the Avogadro project, grown out of the KDE
| educational application Kalzium develops an advanced molecular editor
| designed for use in computational chemistry, molecular modeling,
| bioinformatics, materials science, and related areas. Last Akademy, an
| initiative was developed by Celeste Lyn Paul to bring KDE and science even
| closer.

Gran Canaria Desktop Summit 2009 – The Nepomuk Perspective

,----[ Quote ]
| Now I can look back and say: “I have been there. I have witnessed the first
| joint conference of the two biggest players in open-source desktop software:
| KDE and Gnome.” And I can tell you: it was good. I personally think it makes
| a lot of sense to have the conference together.

Lancelot 1.7 screencast (KDE 4.3)

,----[ Quote ]
| I’ve realized that the one and only screencast of Lancelot I made was even
| before the 1.0 was released. So, I’ve decided to make a new one. This cast is
| meant as an introduction to Lancelot, rather than to show the new features.

New “Usability” Group in Review Board

,----[ Quote ]
| KDE’s Review Board is a useful way for contributors inside and outside a
| project to submit patches and have them reviewed and approved by core
| developers. However, sometimes these patches specifically address design
| issues, or may introduce new design issues that a designer might need to
| review. If they are subscribed to the project mailing list or they regularly
| check Review Board, a designer might be able to notice requests they should
| comment on.

A lightweight heavyweight

,----[ Quote ]
| Of course mentioning LXDE in the same breath as KDE and Gnome will make some
| people bristle. Obviously a project with more than 430 contributors and one
| with 26 are in different leagues, even if the statistics show them in close
| succession.

LXDE: Resource-Friendly Desktop Environment for X

,----[ Quote ]
| We're all pretty much versed in the worlds of GNOME, KDE, and to a lesser
| degree, Xfce, and while there are lots of alternatives, none of the smaller
| ones really seem to gain much traction beyond their fans. An exception is
| LXDE, a small and resource efficient desktop environment.
|
| The Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment, or LXDE as it's more commonly known,
| really takes its "lightweightness" seriously. They claim that LXDE's minimum
| hardware specifications are only slightly higher than that of Windows 98,
| consuming only 45MB of memory after boot. Any Pentium II processor should be
| capable enough of running LXDE, and thanks to it being ported to ARM an
|
| [...]
|
| It seems like LXDE has the possibility of becoming the desktop environment of
| choice for resource-constrained machines. I have several Pentium II machines
| that would perform pretty good with LXDE as their desktops, and I must say, t
| has become a tempting idea.

Debian and LXDE

,----[ Quote ]
| In any case, the combination Debian (testing) + LXDE is lightning fast. I
| haven’t timed anything yet, but it feels even faster than my Arch install,
| even using ext3. Okay, at the moment it doesn’t boot into X yet, I have to
| start it manually. Wireless hasn’t been configured yet, sound doesn’t work
| yet, and I have to install most of the applications I need…but man, it’s
| fast.

Taking LXDE For a Test Drive

,----[ Quote ]
| I found LXDE to a pretty nice desktop environment. It’s certainly fast, comes
| with a reasonable amount of good quality tools, and a nice appearance.
| There’s room for improvement, however, particularly when it comes to
| configuration. I would count it as a good option for recent Windows converts,
| particularly those with older hardware that might have trouble running a
| beefier desktop such as Gnome or KDE. Has it pulled me away from my beloved
| Window Maker? I don’t think so, but it’s progressing nicely and I’d love to
| see what the developers come up with down the road.

Sidux Linux with LXDE - First Impressions

,----[ Quote ]
| I am still new to Sidux and LXDE but I will give it a throrough test.  I use
| my Thinkpad for much of my work when I travel Saigon by motorbike.

Trying out LXDE

,----[ Quote ]
| This is my first time to try out LXDE. I am curious about it and there are
| certain things that I am glad are in LXDE. For one thing, Alt+F2 also pops up
| a run dialog box so I could type the name of the application I want to run.
| There are even suggestions as to what I could run when I typed the first how
| many letters of the application’s name.
