I have been using Pardus for quite a long time, and their new release is
due on the 17th July.
It offers the following benefits *for me*.
It is independently developed, and contains all popular codecs built-in.
It is very simple to install (as are all major Linux now) and uses a
very user-friendly installer called YALI (Yet Another Linux Installer).
There are many independently developed programmes by Pardus, their aims
are to make using the system easy and user-friendly. (PISI package
manager amongst others).
Their implementation of KDE 4 into Pardus 2009 is a joy to use over
other distributions of this type, and is optimised for performance (i.e.
very quick).
It does not matter if you have never heard of it - no-one can be
expected to try every distro out there.
The benefit to Linux in general is that Pardus is Turkish, does not just
rename stock desktops available in all other distributions, and develops
it's own programmes under the GNU. There is absolutely now reason
whatsoever why other distros cannot follow their lead.
Ubuntu is very popular, but if you see the number of distributions that
are predominately built on it, Pardus makes a refreshing change to them
in my opinion.
Pardus has been around for some years - it is not a here today, gone
tomorrow system, so there is no 'splitting of the community' - you could
say that clones like Mint, or Ubuntu or tens of others are splitting the
community, as they all think they can 'do it better'.
Fragmentation between the communities and helping Ubuntu recover from
it's horrendous releases of late could be said of the many clones of
Ubuntu - Pardus does it's own thing, but being Turkish is likely to put
many people off - that's a shame IMO, but the reason I am so
enthusiastic about the system is because it continues to get better with
each release, and works very well with the hardware I have - that's not
to say it will work with everyone's systems - that's where the 'just
works' claims fall flat.
Pardus is an 'install only' at this stage, but there are plans to
release a live CD when 2009 goes final. For the price of a CD and
download, I think it is well worth a look - but your views on it may
well differ. But you asked for my views and comments and I have tried my
best to give reasons. Oh, and I like the combination of purple, grey and
blues used - it looks very smart 'to me'!
