Record Labels Continue 'Negotiating Through Lawsuit'

,----[ Quote ]
| And yet... the process continues. While Warner Music has done a bunch of
| these sue-to-negotiate deals, EMI seems to be involved in many of the more
| recent lawsuits of this nature. Its latest target is GrooveShark, one of a
| bunch of sites that lets you listen to streaming music online. Apparently the
| two companies had been negotiating terms... and then suddenly EMI sued. Par
| for the course. In the meantime, if you're a music startup hoping to do a
| licensing deal with a major label, make sure you have some litigators on your
| legal team. You're going to need them.

RIAA lawyers toss "a skunk in the jury box," apologize

,----[ Quote ]
| Recording industry lawyers dodged a bullet today after the judge in the
| Jammie Thomas-Rasset retrial threatened to throw out the complete testimony
| of an important expert witness. Not disclosing new information to opposing
| counsel makes federal judges very, very grumpy.

RIAA Sued For Racketeering Yet Again

,----[ Quote ]
| A few people have filed lawsuits against the RIAA for racketeering in the
| past, though these charges have always been dismissed. In one such case,
| where the filed charges were dismissed over the summer, new claims were filed
| again charging the RIAA with racketeering for extortion, mail fraud and wire
| fraud in its ongoing efforts involving weakly supported threats against
| alleged file sharers demanding money to avoid being sued.
