[News] Last.fm Harvested by the MAFIAA to No Avail

Last.fm’s User Data is Useless to the RIAA

,----[ Quote ]
| In February TechCrunch rumored that Last.fm had ratted out its users to the
| RIAA. Now they have another source claiming data was shared with the music
| industry group, including IP addresses. Without going into the validity of
| these allegations, we’d like to point out that this data is completely
| useless to the RIAA, from a legal point of view.

Deny This, Last.fm

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of months ago Erick Schonfeld wrote a post titled “Did Last.fm Just
| Hand Over User Listening Data To the RIAA?” based on a source that has proved
| to be very reliable in the past. All hell broke loose shortly thereafter.

Last.fm has legit stuff. What gives the MAFIAA the right to dig into people's
data as though they are assumed to be criminals? This is ripe for abuse.

Libre.fm - Building An Open Last.fm

,----[ Quote ]
| Now there are plans afoot to create a completely free (as in freedom)
| alternative called Libre.fm. I’ve been on Last.fm for a couple of years now
| and the main benefit for me is keeping track of the music I listen to whilst
| also advertising my fabulous *ahem* taste and sharing with friends. It keeps
| track of the music you play through a back-end system called Audioscrobbler
| which records song names, artists, albums etc and shows them on your profile
| page.

Review of the Last.fm Open-Source Client for Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Last.fm is an open-source application licensed under the GPL, allowing you to
| listen to Last.fm radio stations and submit the songs in the same time. For
| those of you unfamiliar with Last.fm, it's a great social music community,
| allowing you to submit songs you currently listen to, statistics, forums for
| bands or music styles (or even more: Amarok has a group, most major
| distributions also, and you can start your own group about anything, match
| people and discuss), together with information for each artist, open for
| anyone to edit, just like the Wikipedia style.
