Processor architectures are one of those few things in computer hardware
for which there typically exists sufficient documentation for any random
individual to start creating a support infastructure. If all hardware had
the kind of documentation that microprocessors do, vendor support questions
would be moot.
Linux had support for ancient frame grabber cards because of this. The docs
were public and anyone that wanted/needed to could use them to debug or
enhance the kernel drivers.
