I have LXDE running on Debian Lenny (up to date) on a extremely outdated
Cyric MII (Pentium II compatible) 300 Mhz box with only 64 MiB EDO-RAM
and a desperately outdated 4 MiB S3 VIRGE GPU.
I prefer text based software on this box:
slrn as nttp client;
alphine as email client;
Midnight Commander as file manager;
Dillo (or some such) as webbrowser.
LXDE lacks many of the functionality of GDE's like Gnome and KDE, but it
is fine, lighting fast and looks good. IIRC the Window manager is GDM.
GNU/Linux in combination with a lightweight Desktop environment, gives
extremely outdated machines a second (useful) chance.
