Building a Scorecard for Open Source
,----[ Quote ]
| In my previous posts, I've drawn an analogy between
| open source software and organic food,
|
| [...]
|
| To address this, I'm proposing the Open Source
| Initiative go beyond the Open Source Definition and
| the Free Software Definition to devise some sort of
| a Software Freedom Definition which articulates a
| holistic vision of software freedom against which
| businesses can be benchmarked. I propose also
| creating a self-certified score-card which
| companies can complete to indicate the approach
| they are taking to promote software freedom as part
| of their business model - maybe "the Open Source
| Audit". I'd then expect abuses to be policed by the
| community at large with final arbitration from OSI.

Ellison: No MySQL spin off
,----[ Quote ]
| Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, has made it clear that he is
| not prepared to spin off Sun's MySQL business in an attempt
| to placate the European Commission investigation of
| competition issues with Oracle's planned acquisition of
| Sun. The deal has already been approved by US authorities
| and Ellison thinks that the European Commission will follow
| saying "I think once they do their job, they're going to
| come to the same conclusion".

Does Oracle matter to open source
,----[ Quote ]
| Maybe they should. Once it acquires Sun, Oracle will be the
| largest sponsor of open source projects people use every
| day. Weâre talking Java, weâre talking mySQL, weâre talking
| OpenOffice.org.
