fOSSa Conference 2009 (Free/Open Source Software Academia Conference)

,----[ Quote ]
| The history of FOSS can be traced back to
| academic origins: distributing source code
| under a permissive license was the de facto
| rule in academia in the 70's. Since then,
| FOSS became a wide spread paradigm throughout
| the software industry, and its alignment with
| academic goals tended to be forgotten.

OSS push in VT Schools and Local Gov

,----[ Quote ]
| If we read this right it means there is real local government
| preference for Open Source. Now right now theyâre going into
| because of costs instead of control, but I think a taste of
| freedom tends to stick around once youâve deployed a FOSS
| solution and itâll be more difficult for Microsoft or even
| IBM, Novell etc to get back in without offering serious
| concessions.
|
| I also like that they are informing people that students can
| take advantage of OpenOffice, because itâs free too and
| supports all the same formats. Thatâs very good news as itâs
| an aspect of Free Software in schools which is often
| overlooked (that what is taught can be taken home without
| pressuring poor students to buy expensive software).
