The Car Analogy

,----[ Quote ]
| The next morning during your commute, you
| notice some funny noises coming from
| beneath the hood. You have a friend who is
| really good with cars, so you ask if she
| can help you out after work. When she sees
| your car, she tells you, "Nope. Can't do
| anything for you. This is one of those
| Nonfree Cars. I can't even open the hood."
|
| So you bring it to your mechanic, and they
| do not even bother with charging you a
| diagnostic fee. "Sorry, sir. This is a
| Nonfree Car. Even if I had the right tools,
| I can't even open the hood lock, let alone
| fix what might be wrong with it. It's
| against the law." Dismayed, you go back to
| the dealer to ask, "What's the deal?"
|
| After waiting for a while, finally a
| service representative calls your name. You
| explain the noise the car is making and all
| the steps you have gone through in order to
| get it serviced. She explains that because
| the Nonfree name has such a great image,
| they don't allow just anyone to service
| their cars. You have to be trained and
| accredited.

GM vs Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way
| computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo
| (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto
| industry and stated, âIf GM had kept up with technology like the computer
| industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the
| gallon.â
|
| In response to Billâs comments, General Motors issued a press release
| stating: âIf GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be
| driving cars with the following characteristics...

If Novell and Microsoft Were in the Car Production and Sales Business...

| Look at it this way for a moment:
|
| * "If I, as an end-user, bought a car from Ford, that does
| indeed contain technology infringing some patent owned by
| DaimlerChrysler--would there by any likelihood that Ford would
| sue me, the end-user?
|
| * "However, if I, as an end-user, buy a SUSE Linux Enterprise Serv-
| er, that may contain (well, it doesn't, and never will, as
| Novell strongly reassures me) software patented technology owned
| by Microsoft--would there be any likelihood that Microsoft would
| sue me, the end-user?

Vista equals Edsel?

,----[ Quote ]
| Imagine that you make cars. You are the biggest automaker in the world and
| you more or less own the market, particularly the corporate fleet segment.
| Because almost everyone has one of your cars, if you want them to keep paying
| you money you have to come up with a better car.
|
| [...]
|
| This is the situation I believe Microsoft is finding itself in with respect
| to Windows Vista: if thereâs one thing that stands out from what Iâve been
| reading and from the letters you send me, Vista isnât cutting it.

Microsoft dreams

| âLook, MicroKlapt only does this for your own security. Just think if someone
