Is open source selling out?
,----[ Quote ]
| The 21st century witnessed the phenomenal
| growth of a new movement, the free, open source
| software (FOSS) movement.
|
| All of the developments described above over
| the last thirty years were the result of a
| paradigm elaborated by the twin drivers of
| business applying the 'patents are profits'
| model or doing things and Governments pursuing
| their defence and public control objectives.
|
| The FOSS models offered something quite
| different - development by the community, for
| the community. However, what seems to be
| happening is that FOSS is simply becoming a
| cheaper and easier to develop stuff than
| previously done by proprietary-patented
| products.
|
| In other words, bit by bit FOSS is being
| 'proprietarised' as it gets incorporated into
| situations and devices which exist solely to
| keep the current paradigm going. A open source
| smart phone is as boring as a proprietary one.
| A Linux embedded Cruise missile is a
| destructive as one would be with a Microsoft OS
| (but maybe more reliable).

Review: Athene is beautiful but flawed
,----[ Quote ]
| Rocklyte Systems' Athene operating environment is at once fascinating
| and frustrating. It's a custom GNU/Linux distribution optimized for
| i686 machines that employs a proprietary graphics toolkit and video
| drivers, which means it's visually impressive and extremely speedy.
| Athene is by far the most unique and technologically advanced
| GNU/Linux derivative to date, but it needs some better
| administrative features, doesn't come with much software, and its
| license is proprietary and restrictive.
|
| [...]
|
| Right now Athene 2004 doesn't offer much in terms of out-of-the-box
| functionality, and you can't be immediately productive with it,
| making it unsuitable for anyone except those willing to explore and
| tinker with it. If that's your goal, U.S. $110 would seem an excessive
| fee for a year's worth of updates on CD.

No Blobs By Default Petition
,----[ Quote ]
| We the undersigned petition you to reconsider your decision of
| including binary drivers by default in the next Ubuntu release.
| We believe, as you do, that it should be as easy as possible for
| end users to enable extra functionality via closed software when
| necessary and if they so wish, but only after an explicit
| acknowledgement and only after being informed about the issues
| at stake and possible alternatives.
