Microsoft-Novell deal: three years of poor-quality spin

,----[ Quote ]
| Novell has produced technology like
| Moonlight, a clone of Microsoft's
| Silverlight, courtesy of its vice-
| president, Miguel de Icaza, who has morphed
| from a free software supporter into a
| Microsoft apologist. But this software
| obviously isn't ready for prime time; else
| why is Novell continuing to use Flash, with
| which Moonlight competes, on its own
| website?
|
| Novell can also take credit for continuing
| to fund the Mono project, which is an
| attempt to clone Microsoft's .NET
| development environment. As De Icaza puts
| it, Windows developers will start
| developing for Linux because of Mono. Sure.
| And I'll be the next president of Mexico,
| senor.
|
| If things are going so swimmingly at Novell
| and the Microsoft pact is salvation from on
| high, then why were nearly four percent of
| staff at Novell sacked recently? We haven't
| seen any sackings at Red Hat, have we? Both
| companies are operating in the same Linux
| space.
|
| If the pact with Microsoft was to bring
| better times, why did Novell end fiscal
| 2007 with a loss of $US44.4 million? A year
| later, it was still haemorrhaging - the
| losses were $US8.7 million. And 2009 isn't
| looking so hot either.

Jobs go at Novell

,----[ Quote ]
| Novell is cutting jobs in various departments
| and in various countries.
|
| The Linux vendor, which has spent recent weeks
| cutting its UK distributors, will trim between
| 100 and 130 jobs from its total headcount of
| 3,900.
|
| The cuts come across geographies and
| departments and staff are getting severance
| packages based on length of service, a
| spokesman for the firm told CNet.
|
| Novell is also suspending contributions to
| employees' 401K pension pots.

Novell, SCO: When FUD Comes Calling

,----[ Quote ]
| But beware. FUD is in operation here. Back in November 2006 Microsoft and
| Novell entered an agreement under the terms of which Microsoft provided a
| covenant to Novell's Linux customers that it would not sue them if it turned
| out that Linux infringed certain unspecified Microsoft patents, as the
| Redmond company had suddenly started claiming in 2004. Novell also agreed to
| provide a similar covenant to Microsoft customers.
|
| As Novell puts it, "By securing a commitment from Microsoft to support the
| use of Linux and open source software, we have allayed any potential concerns
| for our customers and removed a barrier to enterprisewide Linux adoption."
| The fact that Novell stated at the time "there was no threatened litigation"
| from Microsoft leads one to the conclusion that this was all FUD-making.
|
| It's a bit like a food company saying "our products contain no rat poison,"
| thus implying that competitors products might.
