Free Software, Free Society: Of Democracy and Hacking

,----[ Quote ]
| When explaining why Free Software is
| important, one question that often comes up
| is: âdo I really need the software freedom?â
|
| The utility of software freedom is indeed
| not obvious for all. Not everyone can
| understand the source code of a program, and
| less modify it. It appears that the capacity
| to enjoy the four freedoms is only valuable
| to hackers and programmers. Itâs hard to
| convince people to give up on proprietary
| software only for freedomâs sake, as long as
| they donât understand the utility of that
| freedom.

Could Mozillians help reinvent local news?

,----[ Quote ]
| While Iâve only just glanced at all the
| Knight and Sunlight stuff quickly, it does
| feel like there could be some useful
| connections here. Maybe simply by developers
| or others from the Mozilla community
| proposing ideas to Knight? Or maybe, at some
| point, through a more joint initiative
| through Drumbeat? Iâm going to think on it a
| little and possibly post again. In the mean
| time, Iâd welcome comments / brainstorms /
| proposals from any Mozilla people reading
| this post.

Democratization of Knowledge, P2P alternatives and more in Ecuador

,----[ Quote ]
| I asked Marco Fioretti of the Italian Digifreedom to report on the congress
| on free software and education that we both attended as speakers in Quito,
| Ecuador, and which was organized and hosted by the Salesian teaching order,
| who preferentially work with the children of the poor.
