The Death of Journalism: David Eaves and Vancouver's Open Source Era (part two)
,----[ Quote ]
| Iâm not sure if itâs an explicit demand, so
| much as a behavioural shift. People donât
| trust anybody anymore. People donât see the
| Vancouver Sun as an authoritative news source
| that they should implicitly trust. And they
| certainly donât see 24hrs or Metro that way.
| These things are rags that people get bits of
| information from. People are disappointed
| when they find out that these news sources
| have lied to them, but they arenât shocked.
| Traditional media is no longer the authority.
| It's not so much that people are organizing
| against the media, but they prefer more
| transparency. People want the opportunity to
| know whatâs actually going on.
|
| In terms of the open data portal, there may
| only be a small percentage of residents who
| go and look at the data. But the fact that we
| have the option of knowing...thatâs really
| powerful.

City Hall Gets Naked: David Eaves and Vancouver's Open Source Era (part one)
,----[ Quote ]
| David Eaves: Open Data involves getting
| collected data online. The data portal, for
| me, is a place where we centralize information
| so that people can find it. Data can involve
| surveys of anything. These surveys could range
| from how many homeless people there are to the
| geographical location of infrastructure in the
| city.
|
| This data can also involve the data that the
| city generates, such as budgets and agendas. I
| want to enable anyone to track whatâs going
| on.

Developers spin City of Vancouverâs open data into maps and VanTrash

| use.

|
| More local open-data projects are listed on the
| Vancouver Open Data Wiki. Thereâs no doubt
| these are just the tip of the iceberg, as more
| projects will sprout up as time goes by and as
| more data is released.

Advocates say open-source software is better
,----[ Quote ]
| Advocates for open-source software are urging governments to embrace the
| concept, which they argue will save money, offer more flexibility and create
| better computer programs by encouraging collaboration.
|
| Open-source programs - which allow anyone to change or modify them - have
| been gaining popularity in recent years, from free consumer software such as
| the Firefox web browser to Internet servers and other complex applications.
