The GNU/Linux Naming Controversy Quietly Lives On
,----[ Quote ]
| Should we really have to call it GNU/Linux
| instead of just Linux?
|
| The question lingers in my mind after a recent
| reader commented and corrected me that I
| should use the term "GNU/Linux" when referring
| to the entire operating system. I guess the
| naming controversy quietly lives on.

When Open Source Meets Closed Minds

| Me: âDo you mean Debian Linux?â
|
| Caller: âYes, that! Is it some sort of
| computer mafia or something?â
|
| Me: âUh, no, itâs just a different operating
| system. Nothing to worry about.â
|
| Caller: âBut itâs illegal! Itâs not Microsoft,
| not even Windows! Theyâre on a normal
| Microsoft computer, so theyâre breaking the
| law! I think they stole my identity when I
| came in the building! Iâm calling the FBI!â
| *hangs up*

Quote for the day:
"Donât encourage new, cross-platform Java classes, especially donât help get

Re-branding Ubuntu
,----[ Quote ]
| I personally did not think that was a good idea for two main reasons :
|
| 1. The number of forks for Ubuntu will/might keep on increasing. The
| flavours , the choice of software and hence, the user-base and community for
| each fork may vary. It does not make sense to have them under a single
| thread. It would be like saying Linux Feodora edition, Linux Slackware
| edition. You get the idea.
|
| 2. The users of these forks may themselves might not want to be a part of the
| Ubuntu umbrella. For example, Kubuntu users have their own freenode channel
| for IRC, their own ailing lists, etc. Futhermore, most KD users will hate
| working on GNOME (as is the case for GNOME users.)
