GNOME board member denies Icaza post caused furore

,----[ Quote ]
| A member of the GNOME Foundation board has
| denied that a post by GNOME co-founder Miguel
| de Icaza led to a discussion on the Foundation
| mailing list which resulted in a call for the
| project to cut its ties with the GNU Project.
|
| Behdad Esfahbod made reference to a story in
| these columns, wherein it was claimed that a
| Planet GNOME post by De Icaza, about
| Microsoft's Silverlight technology, served as
| the catalyst for another Foundation member,
| Lucas Rocha, to start a discussion on members'
| complaints about the type of content appearing
| on the Planet.
|
| The discussion begun by Rocha led to one
| senior developer, Philip Van Hoof, calling for
| a vote on whether GNOME should continue to be
| part of the GNU Project. He was supported by
| GNOME advisory board member, David
| Schlesinger. The iTWire report did not
| attribute Van Hoof's call to the Foundation,
| but only to him.

The Importance of GNU

,----[ Quote ]
| Unix was a good choice in that it was
| compartmentalized and it was relatively
| straightforward to replace each Unix
| component with it's GNU replacement. (For
| anyone who doesn't know: GNU is a recursive
| acronym that means 'GNU is Not Unix'). Bit
| by bit RMS worked and by the early 1990's he
| had almost a complete system. Only one major
| part was missing and that was the kernel.
|
| As we know Linus Torvalds wrote a kernel and
| then people started to use the GNU utilities
| to create a complete operating system. Of
| course there were many contributions from
| different places, but the two most important
| parts were the GNU utilities and the Linux
| kernel.

Linux Freedom Under Attack

,----[ Quote ]
| I think we also need to send Richard
| Stallman to meet with new Federal CIO,
| Vivek Kundra, to discuss our government's
| obligation to use free software. Stallman
| told me, himself, that he would like an
| opportunity to meet with Mr. Kundra. So,
| if any of you have any connections or
| contacts in that realm, let's help RMS go
| to Washington.
|
| We deserve a voice in Washington because
| we know there are those in the opposing
| camps with lobbyists and representatives
| to promote their side of the story. We
| need ours.
