Google Is Going to Release Its Own Chrome-based Netbook

,----[ Quote ]
| In addition to introducing its own smartphone,
| Google is reportedly going to release a netbook
| under its own brand name. Naturally, this is
| going to run the upcoming Chrome OS, which is
| being developed for this class of low-cost
| laptops.

Too early to declare victory in the netbook war

,----[ Quote ]
| But can he really expect to challenge Android,
| Symbian and Ubuntu on ARM computers? Can he
| even expect to match Apple, in that market? I
| really doubt it, and I suspect there are going
| to be some panicky slanging matches over the
| next 24 months, as Intel and Microsoft start
| blaming each other for taking their eyes off
| the ball.

Best Linux Distributions for Netbooks

,----[ Quote ]
| A Linux distribution is a Linux operating
| system distributed by a specific vendor,
| such as Ubuntu. The best Linux
| distribution for your netbook varies
| according to your personal preferences and
| which netbook PC you own or plan to
| purchase. For example, if you are familiar
| with using Ubuntu on a desktop PC, you
| might prefer to install the Ubuntu Netbook
| Remix on your netbook PC. Alternatively,
| you can purchase a netbook with a
| preinstalled Linux operating system.

Netbook screen too small? Not for this Linux software

,----[ Quote ]
| I love my little ânetbookâ laptop
| computer, barely the size of a small
| hardcover book. But running programs on it
| turned out to be more frustrating than Iâd
| imagined.
|
| The problem? Programs written for standard
| computers often come with toolbars along
| the top, status bars along the bottom and
| a dozen other gadgets that take up
| precious room on a netbook screen.

Sugar Gets Sweeter: Former OLPC Exec Walter Bender on Netbooks, E-books, Blueberry, and Cloudberry

,----[ Quote ]
| Second, Bender hinted that the next
| release of Sugar on a Stick after
| Blueberry, code named âCloudberry,â will
| take Sugar in some very interesting new
| directions, bringing capabilities like
| cloud-based storage to Sugar users. That
| ought to make it easier for teachers and
| students to share documents and
| applications, for one thing. Click through
| to the end of the interview for the
| details.

Amyâs Mobile Makeup â How She Does it

,----[ Quote ]
| I just got myself an Eee PC 900A. I augmented
| the RAM to bring it up to 1.5GB and am
| considering a hard drive upgrade. It was
| running Xandros Linux, but I didnât like it
| much. So, I upgraded it to the Easy Peasy
| Ubuntu Linux, made specifically to run on Eee
| PCs. It works for me. I love this little
| netbook. It fits in my totebag. It has Wi-
| fi. Itâs great for using the web. Would I
| recommend one of these for just anyone? No.
| Itâs more of a âgeekâsâ netbook. For everyone
| else, I would get the Acer Aspire One netbook.

Linux Is Regaining Netbook Market Share Quickly

,----[ Quote ]
| Despite this ABI Research published some
| new data last month and the results may
| surprise you. They place the 2009 market
| share for Linux on netbooks at 32% with 11
| million units preloaded with Linux shipping
| this year. In an interview with
| DesktopLinux.com, Jeffrey Orr of ABI makes
| clear that dial boot machines (i.e.: the
| Acer Aspire One AOD250-1613) and machines
| that are purchased with Windows but later
| have Linux loaded do not count in the 32%
| number. That number is pure Linux sales.
| This data confirms comments made first by
| Jay Pinkert and later by Todd Finch of Dell
| that one third of their netbooks sales are
| Linux machines and that there is no higher
| return rate for Linux systems than there is
| for ones sold with Windows preloaded.
