Who needs a Google OS? Splashtop 2.0 already does the same thing

,----[ Quote ]
| Google has promised to release an operating system called Chrome
| OS that replaces Windows with a simpler Linux-based system that
| launches the companyâs Chrome browser. The company has been seeking
| a netbook manufacturer to build a Chrome OS-powered consumer laptop.
| In theory, it would be cheaper and more reliable than Windows, less
| vulnerable to malware attacks, and would remove a lot of the
| configuration and maintenance work that drives many Windows users crazy.

Splashtop Adds Instant-On to Acer, Sony Computers

,----[ Quote ]
| DeviceVM, the folks behind Splashtop, are expanding their instant-on, Linux
| solution to new brands today. The company just announced deals with Acer and
| Sony. The Acer AspireRevo Nettop and the Sony VAIO NW notebook line get the
| Splashtop treatment, although Acer is calling theirs âRevoBoot.â
|
| By using Splashtop, the devices can boot into a functional work environment
| complete with Internet access in a browser. Itâs similar to the Hyperspace
| offering from Phoenix, but doesnât add any additional cost to the consumer.
| Hyperspace requires a yearly subscription fee, but offers more than a
| browser, music and photo app: Programs like the ThinkFree Office suite are
| included, for example.

Linux is the Engine Under the Hood of Instant On

,----[ Quote ]
| Splashtop is a product from DeviceVM and was the first to really grab the
| attention of the laptop crowd. It comes pre-installed on laptops from Asus,
| Lenovo and VoodooPC. It's also available on a large number of Asus
| motherboards and the Asus Eee Box B202. For the developer crowd there is a
| list of the components used in Splashtop on their website along with the
| statement that they are building an SDK to make development for the platform
| easier.

Hands-on: HyperSpace by Phoenix joins the instant-on fray

,----[ Quote ]
| Does your laptop take too long to turn on? Linux-based instant-on operating
| systems have turned up on plenty of recent laptops, such as the
| Splashtop-powered Asus N10J, and now Phoenix is jumping into the action with
| its HyperSpace OS, as featured on a handful of new Lenovo laptops including
| the S10 Netbook. We got a chance to get a hands-on preview with HyperSpace.

Phoenix HyperSpace: An Instant-On Linux Environment?

,----[ Quote ]
| Fifteen months ago we exclusively showed off SplashTop from DeviceVM, which
| was an instant-on Linux environment embedded into ASUS motherboards and since
| then it has worked its way into products from other OEMs (including
| notebooks). DeviceVM continues to work on further refining SplashTop by
| adding in virtualization support and other features, along with a promised
| developer SDK. Phoenix Technologies, the company producing the BIOSes for
| many of the motherboards on the market, is today introducing their SplashTop
| competitor. HyperSpace is the Phoenix Technologies product being unveiled
| this morning with several distinct differences from SplashTop.

The Linux Boot Sequence, Visualised

,----[ Quote ]
| Most of us don't appreciate all the processes involved with our OS's boot
| sequence; we're far more interested in watching that status bar fill. In this
| visualization of the Linux boot sequence, each function is a node, and each
| line connecting the nodes represents a call, direct branch, or indirect
| branch.

Booting Debian in 14 seconds

,----[ Quote ]
| Many readers will have heard about Arjan van de Ven and Auke Kok's work to
| boot an ASUS Eee 901 in 5 seconds. Inspired by this work, and because I have
| the same laptop, I decided to try to reproduce their results. So far I have
| not come very close to their 5 seconds, but I have made some significant
| improvements compared to the default boot time for Debian on that machine;
| this article describes what I've done.

Linux boots in 2.97 seconds

,----[ Quote ]
| Japanese embedded Linux house Lineo has announced a quick-start technology
| that it claims can boot Linux in 2.97 seconds on a low-powered system. The
| technology appears similar to but much faster than Linux's
| existing "suspend-to-disk" capability.

My Bootchart Record: 12 Seconds to Boot, 7 Seconds to X

,----[ Quote ]
| I may have to write how I did this at some point. I use Archlinux x86_64,
| with a custom kernel from Zen. It's got most of the stuff I need built in,
| and all other crap is thrown out. I further have added concurrency in rc.conf
| using @ before all but a couple of my daemons, and am using ReiserFS, with
| noatime notail nodiratime. I have further speed things along by editing
| rc.sysinit, and removed hundreds of lines of unneeded crap as well. One trick
| I found was that it is actually faster to mount an NTFS partition I have via
| rc.local, rather than fstab. That said, I can't think of anything else to
| make this faster!

Reboot like a racecar with kexec

,----[ Quote ]
| Kexec was originally intended for use by kernel and system developers who had
| to reboot several times a day. Soon, system administrators for
| high-availability servers found use for it as well. As systems get more and
| more advanced, and boot times get longer, end users can now benefit from it.
