Don't restrict the flow of technical knowledge
,----[ Quote ]
| Iâm a member of two IEEE societies that
| publish IEEE Transactions. While most of
| the papers are rather scholarly, I
| sometimes run across one that Iâd like to
| summarize and provide a link for readers to
| download the original paper. That happened
| recently. Knowing that IEEE forbids third
| parties such as T&MW from posting IEEE
| copyrighted work (I can live with that), I
| contacted one of the paperâs authors asking
| if he would post his paper and Iâll link to
| it.
|
| The author agreed to post his paper, but
| heâs not a member of that IEEE society and
| thus he had no way to download his own
| work. That in itself is inexcusable, but it
| gets worse.

IEEE wants its students to be slaves
,----[ Quote ]
| Below is a message I just got from IEEE. I was a student member of IEEE and
| office bearer of my
| college's IEEE chapter. But I didnt renew my membership with several reasons
| including disagreement on such a great amount of knowledge being locked up
| behind their online digital library. Now, This is a message inviting me back
| to join IEEE offering non-free software from M$ for gratis. This has been
| shown as an attractive offer in the mail, But i feel it as a confirmation
| message not to join IEEE ever after.

Pillay: OOXML debate and the IEEE code of ethics
,----[ Quote ]
| Harish Pillay is annoyed by the ISO OOXML process and thinks the conduct
| infringes upon his professional code of ethics. But his rules just don't
| apply.
|
| [...]
|
| An ISO technocrat would probably stress now that ISO/IEC does not apply these
| IEEE principles and wash his hands. Admitted. I thought, I had the view
| ISO/IEC process participants would naturally apply principles like these in
| standardization. I was naive. The mere existence of a Code of Ethics is an
| indication that the ethics seems to contravene the common practice. Of
| course, no doubt, ISO is not bound by IEEE ethics.
