Linux: Can it get any easier?

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently I did some articles on Samba and
| various ways to share folders in Linux. Now,
| normally Samba can be pretty tricky to set up
| right. Oh sure, there are tools to help you
| out with this (and some of those tools
| actually work quite well), but the end user
| doesnât want to have to monkey with Samba. In
| fact, the end user doesnât want (or even
| need) to know what Samba is. End users just
| wants to be able to tell their computers to
| share out a folder to other users. Period.
|
| Of course, most of you are thinking - yeah
| rightâon Linux? Even with Windows you
| typically have to join either a workgroup or
| a domain to make file sharing easy. So how in
| the world could Linux make this easier than
| it is on Windows? Believe it or not, it now
| is.

The Perennial Year of the Linux Desktop

,----[ Quote ]
| The gains must come gradually, one user at a
| time. For me, the year of the Linux desktop
| is long gone, but I still feel like a
| relative noob at times. For others it was
| more recent. Perhaps for you 2010 is the year
| of the Linux desktop. I'll make the call now,
| 2011 is sure to be another year for gradual
| gains in Linux desktop marketshare.

A return to Linux: a review of Ubuntu Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Linux, specifically Ubuntu linux is Grandma
| and Mom ready. for two simple reasons... It
| will NOT get full of viruses and spyware for
| you to clean out every visit, AND via VNC or
| even log-me-in you can easily help them
| remotely if you need to. Not having to fix and
| clean a PC every week because the user is not
| a computer expert is a holy grail for any tech
| person. It's easier to use than a Windows PC,
| Far FAR cheaper as there are no licensing
| costs, and most software someone would want at
| home is available free for it with a single
| click. But the big test is a real world non-
| techie. can they use it? My wife will be the
| test subject. Yes that will do nicely, use
| family as guinea pigs!

Forget Linux for Dummies: now itâs Linux for Grannies

,----[ Quote ]
| In the case of Alex, itâs not clear what role
| Linux is meant to play. The way the deal is
| set up appears to offer few of the benefits of
| open source, but has the high cost more
| commonly associated with Windows.
