Lubuntu Gets a New Look

,----[ Quote ]
| Finally, the Lubuntu developers have
| created a special interface for netbooks.
| I havenât had much time to explore it yet,
| but hope to do so soon. Briefly, though,
| hereâs what it looks like...

My New Linux Laptop

,----[ Quote ]
| Then, Linux Mint caught my eye. Linux
| Mint 8 KDE Community Edition, to be
| precise. Just released, with a 2.6.31
| kernel, and KDE 4.3.4. I downloaded the
| iso, and gave it a spin. It recognized
| all my hardware, including the Atheros
| wifi card. A very nice implementation of
| KDE 4.3.4. I played with it for a couple
| of hours, and decided to take the plunge.
|
| Installation was as smooth and easy as it
| should be. Select the entire windows
| partition, wipe it clean, and divide it up
| for Linux. Answer a few simple questions,
| and very shortly thereafter, it was
| telling me to remove the DVD and reboot.
| I spent a little time putting up the
| plasma widgets I like, and in little over
| half an hour I had my desktop installed
| and looking like I wanted. Mint KDE is a
| very usable system, easy to use (if you
| like KDE4, like I do), and beautiful to
| look at. I turned on a bunch of eye candy
| I donât usually, just because I could, and
| the system hardly noticed.

Minting the Girlfriend

,----[ Quote ]
| Is Vista gone from her laptop? Not yet, but
| maybe someday (Move Media Player not
| installing on Linux or through Wine is the
| last hangup). She is booted in Mint more often
| than not and has found her way around the
| Ubuntu Software Center to install Frostwire
| (among other things). She also used the Linux
| answer machine to hunt down the driver for her
| Cannon MP190 printer when it was not auto-
| found by the printer installer on Mint.
|
| All in all I must say though, the best part
| about installing Mint on her laptop is that
| now when I use it to check my email I no
| longer have to use Vista :)

- From Mandriva to Mint

,----[ Quote ]
| I have liked Mandriva since Mandrake Linux
| 9.1. Its been an amazing distribution ever
| since. Pure visual delight and ease of use.
| I like KDE for the look and feel, GNOME is
| mostly a no no for me. Mandriva being a KDE
| centric distro fits the bill perfectly.
| Mandriva is the default king of our two
| year old Family Desktop. We all loved the
| latest version and despite KDE being a
| little buggy, find it convenient to use.
| I gave this info to emphasize that it was
| not easy for me to think about moving from
| Mandriva to any other distro, specially a
| GNOME centric Mint. Here goes the story :
|
| My wife's vaio completed 1 year and ran out
| of official warranty. Hence she allowed me
| to dual boot it with Mandriva and Vista.
| She was already comfortable with Mandriva,
| so it was supposed to be a smooth move. The
| problem started right after the first
| install.

Taking a look at Linux Mint 8 "Helena"

,----[ Quote ]
| DW: What's new in Mint 8? What are some of
| the new features people will enjoy in
| Helena?
|
| CL: We answered many of the requests we
| received after the release of Linux Mint 7
| and some of the changes we made were quite
| popular among our users. The Update
| Manager now allows you to ignore updates
| for certain packages. The level associated
| with each package is something we maintain
| so this addition gives a lot more power to
| the user. We also improved many aspects of
| the Software Manager and we implemented
| numerous little things to make the system
| more comfortable to use.

Linux Mint 8 KDE Community Edition

,----[ Quote ]
| The final release of Linux Mint 8 (Helena)
| KDE Community Edition is available for
| download. I wrote about the Release Candidate
| of this a couple of weeks ago, so I won't add
| too much more now. I'm still more of a Gnome
| desktop user than KDE, but as KDE 4 gets
| better and better, and combined with the
| excellent integration with Linux Mint, this
| one is a real alternative for me.
