FreeBSD 7.3 Updates BSD Legacy

,----[ Quote ]
| The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team this
| week put out the FreeBSD 7.3 release which
| is about four months after FreeBSD 8 was
| released.
|
| FreeBSD is known as a solid, stable and
| reliable open source operating system. It
| should come as no surprise then that many
| users of FreeBSD don't jump to the next
| major version number right when it becomes
| available, but rather stay with the legacy
| version for a while.

Dru Lavigne made me do it: I killed Debian, installed an unbootable Ubuntu, now I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 with GNOME

,----[ Quote ]
| Did I mention speed? This GNOME 2.26 desktop
| just flies. It's a pleasure to use, and if I
| can manage to install FreeBSD 7.2-release and
| get the same speed with working Java and
| Totem, I'll be very, very happy. Working
| Flash, should I manage it, will be an added
| bonus.
|
| And thanks, Dru, for the inspiration to do my
| first serious FreeBSD test.

FreeBSD 8.0 installation walk-through

,----[ Quote ]
| Unfortunately, FreeBSD is a great operating
| system with an unholy awful installer â
| compared to other operating system installers
| currently available. Some people are
| comfortable with text-mode installers, some
| arenât.
|
| They are nothing to be afraid of if you have
| a moderate amount of knowledge, but for those
| who absolutely require a more up-to-date
| installer, PC-BSD may be of more interest
| than FreeBSD. Having said that, the
| installation is probably the hardest part of
| using FreeBSD, so if youâve made it through
| this, FreeBSD is a lot of fun to play with.

Benchmarking Debian's GNU/kFreeBSD

,----[ Quote ]
| There has been an effort underway within the
| Debian development community to pull the
| FreeBSD kernel within this distribution to
| provide an alternative to using the Linux
| kernel. In essence with this Debian
| GNU/kFreeBSD project you have the standard
| Debian package set providing a GNU user-land
| with a GNU C library, but the FreeBSD kernel
| is running underneath. The Debian project has
| also been working on Debian GNU/Hurd to
| effectively do the same thing but with the GNU
| Mach microkernel. But unlike Debian GNU/Hurd,
| with the release of Debian 6.0 "Squeeze",
| Debian GNU/kFreeBSD will reach a release
| status. With the Debian Squeeze release being
| just two months away we have decided to
| provide the first public set of benchmarks
| that compare the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
| performance to that of Debian GNU/Linux. We
| have tested both the 32-bit and 64-bit builds
| of Debian with the Linux and FreeBSD kernels.

Debian pushes development of kFreeBSD port

,----[ Quote ]
| The Debian Release Team is pleased to announce that it sees
| the port of the Debian system to the FreeBSD kernel fit to be
| handled equal with the other release ports. The upcoming
| release codenamed 'Squeeze' is planned to be the first Debian
| distribution to be released with Linux and FreeBSD kernels.

Debian GNU/kFreeBSD amd64 development machine

,----[ Quote ]
| The Debian GNU/kFreeBSD porters are pleased to announce that there is now a
| Debian GNU/kFreeBSD amd64 machine available to the Debian developers. It is
| kindly hosted by "ETH ZÃrich, Department of Physics". We would like to thank
| them for their contribution to the GNU/kFreeBSD development.
