| There is also an initiative to push for
| cameras' operating system to go open source,
| and with applications be developed so users can
| customize how the shooter behaves.

Watch the picture. Many companies already put Linux in cameras, but
it's closed and locked down. Blu-ray is being made more available:

Burn Blu-rays onto recordable DVDs

| The developers of x.264, the open source
| version of the h.264 hi-def video codec used by
| YouTube and many others, have taken the first
| step towards building a free Blu-ray creation
| toolkit. They've been able to make the codec
| compliant with Blu-ray video.

'Frankencamera': A Giant Leap For Digital Photos?

,----[ Quote ]
| According to Levoy, these are just a couple of
| examples of how programmers could change the future
| of photography with the Frankencamera. The key is
| that the camera uses a Linux operating system. All
| digital cameras are essentially minicomputers, says
| Levoy, and they can be modified a bit by the
| photographer. But the manufacturer determines what
| features are available. Linux is "open source," which
| means the camera owner can change everything about
| the electronic guts.

Open source camera could pave the way for open source hardware

,----[ Quote ]
| Recently a Techrepublic reader sent me a link to this story from Science Daily
| about a professor (Mark Levoy) of computer science at Stanford who is developing
| an open source camera. The article tells the story of a fledgling program,
| Computational Photography, which researches photography to help improve cameras.
| Mr. Levoy developed the camera so that other computational photographers could
| help improve the software.

Frankencamera is open source, runs on Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| Photo scientists at Stanford University have conceived what is probably the
| world's first open-source camera. Their contraption, dubbed the
| Frankencamera, consists of a Nokia N95 mobile phone camera module, circuit
| board, a couple of lenses from Canon and Linux for all the open-source
| goodness.
