What's all the fuss about Peppermint OS?
,----[ Quote ]
| There was a time when "yet another Linux
| distro" (no offense intended) would have
| been quickly shrugged off by non-Linux tech
| bloggers. Is the fact that Peppermint
| wasn't ignored a sign that attitudes toward
| Linux are changing? Or does it just tell us
| that if you throw the word "cloud" into
| your PR materials that more people are
| willing to pay attention?

Peppermint Linux Mixes Ubuntu, LXDE and Prism
,----[ Quote ]
| A new Linux distro is officially hitting
| its 1.0 release today, but you'll have to
| forgive me for not being too excited.
| Peppermint OS is now out, with the aim of
| being a fast, cloud focused Linux operating
| system.
|
| A quick look under the hood reveals that
| it's mostly a mashup of technologies that
| are available (and I'm already running),
| with an Ubuntu base (by way of the Linux
| Mint Ubuntu derivative) and leveraging the
| lightweight LXDE desktop. Ubuntu by default
| uses GNOME which is bulkier and consumes a
| larger resource footprint than LXDE.

Linux Mint 9 ETA
,----[ Quote ]
| Looking at the remaining bugs and
| considering the amount of testing needed I
| would say weâre about 1 week away from
| releasing Linux Mint 9. I know most
| operating systems and distributions stick
| to release dates and announce them well in
| advance but I see no reason not to release
| something once itâs ready and many reasons
| not to do so until it is. The release could
| be out a little earlier or a little bit
| later than expected.

Xubuntu Linux 10.04
,----[ Quote ]
| Last week I did a review of Kubuntu 10.04,
| one of Canonicalâs officially supported
| Ubuntu derivatives. Todayâs review is about
| Xubuntu 10.04, an officially recognized but
| not supported Ubuntu derivative. According
| to the Xubuntu downloads page, it is based
| on the âfeature-rich core of Ubuntuâ Linux.

Ubuntu with a K

| There are also parts of GNOME that I love,
| kubuntu
|
| Ubuntu still lacks a powerful desktop. KDE
| still lacks simple applications like the
| Ubuntu Software Center and commercial
| solutions like the Ubuntu One Music Store.
| Ubuntu could bring to KDE what it lacks,
| and vice-versa.

Linux-Based Peppermint OS One Ships

|
| The team behind the cloud-based Peppermint
| OS flavor of Linux has announced the
| availability of Version 1.0 of the
| technology.
|
| Indeed, in a news release and related
| material on the Peppermint OS Website,
| Shane Remington, a core member of the
| Peppermint development team as Web
| developer for the Peppermint OS, said
| Peppermint OS One will be available by noon
| on May 10. The OS had been in beta up to
| this point, but is now ready for prime
| time, he said.
|
| [...]
|
| For his part, Remington said Peppermint OS
| One is the only operating system shipping
| with Seesmic Web by default.

Peppermint: Ask and they deliver
,----[ Quote ]
| To me, Linux is still largely about
| community, and my experiences with
| Peppermint and my interactions with the team
| of individuals responsible for putting it
| together have done nothing if not reinforce
| that.

Peppermint OS: a review
,----[ Quote ]
| You get Peppermint OS, thatâs what! Brought
| to you by the same developer responsible
| for Linux Mint 8 LXDE Community Edition,
| and for resurrecting Linux Mint Fluxbox CE
| as well, Peppermint OS is a lightweight,
| fast, stable implementation of what Kendall
| Weaverâs vision of the perfect Linux distro
| might be for speed and the web.
|
| [...]
|
| Peppermint OS is among the first to try a
| lot of what itâs doing, and I think it does
| a great job of that. The sheer speed,
| respect for old hardware and minimal
| resources, and stability alone make it a
| standout, but the smooth way the Peppermint
| team (Iâm looking at you, Kendall!)
| implemented the webapps seamlessly with the
| other native client-side applications makes
| this distro feel like itâs something thatâs
| taken the next step toward a larger
| universe. That universe has the personal
| computer not being simply confined to
| running its code all by itself, but being
| embedded and a part of the web and the rest
| of the world as a whole.
|
| And thatâs something I find exciting.
|
| My feelings about using Peppermint are
| overwhelmingly positive. Itâs intuitive and
| user-friendly and I can honestly say that
| Iâm going to leave it on this laptop for a
| while and see how things go. So far Iâm
| very impressed, so I want to keep using it!
|
| Great job, Peppermint team! I look forward
| to whatâs coming next!
