Celebrate Independence Day By Thanking Your Open Source Developers
,----[ Quote ]
| Not to get all patriotic on you, but I
| wanted to deliver a simple message as many
| of us head into this 4th of July holiday
| weekend. We are celebrating American
| independence (and our Canadian friends just
| celebrated Canadian independence). The idea
| of being free to make our own choices runs
| deep in our culture. In that spirit take a
| moment to reflect on what the FOSS (free and
| open source software) movement has meant to
| you and to the IT industry.

Ben Franklin Day at The Saratogian: A âDeclaration of Independenceâ from newsroom software (with video)
,----[ Quote ]
| Most of the news and photographs on the
| pages, and the layout of those pages
| themselves, were prepared for publication
| without using the usual newsroom software
| for writing, editing, toning, cropping and
| paginating.
|
| Instead, all this work was done using free
| software available to anyone on the
| Internet. And yes, it was hard work. The
| proprietary software is designed to be
| efficient, reliable and relative fast for
| the task of producing a daily newspaper. The
| free substitutes, not so much.
|
| [...]
|
| But between us, producing todayâs paper
| wasnât easy for the newsroom. News Editor
| Paul Tackett has been working days and
| nights, on top of his usual job, to set up
| most of the dayâs pages in a layout program
| called Scribus.

Newspaper tries free software for a day
,----[ Quote ]
| The Saratogian tried an experiment for
| Independence Day - run free software for a
| day, to produce the July 4 2010 issue of
| their (web and print) newspaper. They called
| it the Ben Franklin Edition *. The free
| software experiment is part of the Ben
| Franklin Project of the Journal Register
| Company, which owns The Saratogian.

Who Should - or Shouldn't - Use Linux?
,----[ Quote ]
| Independence Day may come only once a year
| here in the land of stars and stripes, but
| the topic of independence is one that's never

Who gives a fsck about a license?
,----[ Quote ]
| As someone who uses Linux I do not care what
| license it is under. I use it because it
| suits my computing style. I use it because it
| does what I want, how I want and in the
| manner that I want. The computer becomes an
| extension of me. I cannot achieve that with
| proprietary operating systems where I have to
| conform with how they think I should use my
| computer.

'Lindependence 2008' aims to Free Felton from Microsoft Windows
,----[ Quote ]
| "We're trying to get as many people as possible to switch to Linux, because
| the main thing is most people don't use computers for fancy things, so
| they're wasting money," said Ken Starks, a Linux advocate and owner of HeliOS
| Solutions in Austin, Texas, which strives to create technologies and provide
| cost effective products to its customers.

| Lindependence 2008 introduces Linux to the town of Felton, California --
| about 6,000 people who live at the foot of the San Lorenzo Valley in Santa

| assisting those wishing to declare their digital independence for an entire
| week -- starting on Independence Day 2008 -- by using their choice of distro

Linuxy Declarations of Independence
,----[ Quote ]
| It's almost the Fourth of July, and few things represent the freedoms we
| enjoy as Americans more than open source software. Now, if only the
| proprietary world would open up their drivers, quit violating the GPL and
| abandon copy protection, we'd all be a lot happier.
