My long lasting (personal) survey has taught me that the following may be
the best options if you are looking for:

1) A small number of advertisements.
2) A simple interface that does not require high bandwidth.
3) Good overview/utilisation.

- For finance: http://finance.yahoo.com/ or http://finance.yahoo.com/m2?u
- For word definitions: http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict
- For daily and up-to-the-hour news: http://news.yahoo.com/
- Search Engine: http://www.webcrawler.com/info.wbcrwl/ as a good
alternative for Google
- For Weather: http://weather.yahoo.com/ but best bookmarked once a city is
looked-up
- On-line auctions best accessed via:
http://listings.ebay.com/pool1/glistings/list/all/category0/index.html?from=
R4

The frequent choice of Yahoo is not intentional. It gathers a large amount
of resources and outputs them in a single frame with an almost text-only
mode -- very practical (but may be only my personal preference).
