Actually, you don't need FTP to upload pictures via WP1. 5. You can
upload them via Upload in your admin panel. IIRC I had to CHMOD some
file or directory to something else before this option would work for
me. I think that it depends on your server and that this last step
isn't necessary for most people.
A related useful plugin is at

easy to choose from uploaded files to link to in your blog.
