What version of the GIMP? What platform? It works fine on here, GIMP 1.2
under Linux.
Also, your symptoms suggest that it might be font incompatibility. Is it
possible that lower-case characters are not rendered properly?
Consider saving all your gimp settings (e.g. ~/.gimp) and re-installing if
it's a real pain...
