Cairo is dead but  a contemporary story would be that Microsoft is promising 
a 'modular' version of Windows (whatever that means, but I guess that they 
consider Windows 'finished' and that they only need to update parts of it 
now and then). I wouldn't be surprised if a future version of Windows looks 
very much like Mac OS X, being based on BSD and therefore compatible with 
the 'industry standard' Linux, more or less.
