I have finally found a solution:
mv *Perturbation_Specification dummy
This operation was permitted and I could then erase the cruft through cPanel,
which had the necessary privileges. What a nasty bug this can become...
cPanel ought to have removed that tab in the first place. I am yet to get
rid of similar 'jammed' files, which reside on a different site where a
filename begins with a space.
Many thanks to all!
