I used to be using Wikis for collaboration on papers (didn't find any
interests from others, to whom Wikis are still an unknown technology). A
more successful 'case study' are my password-protected Wikis, which I have
used for daily correspondence with friends and family for over a year <

hacked version available, in case anyone else is interested in SPAM-free
communication* that resembles IM but is not real-time. There are some blog
items about it, too.
* Communication using RSS feeds is another possibility I once discussed, but
there are too many pitfalls.
