...Took me a while to get there, but it was actually less complicated than I
had thought (I was trying to analyse this too profoundly).

There was some article some months ago (could find the link if you wish;
Manchester Evening News perhaps) that explained how the "geek factor" was
becoming 'cool'/'hip' (yes, I hate these words). I know some people whose
apprearance would not reflect on 'geekiness', yet they are most definitely
flattered by this label. One friend of mine was called "the geek" by some
friends of his. He currently plays rugby for the Wasps. I dare say that I
have my geeky moments, too. But the visual stereotypes are a complete
misfit.
