What mail program and which desktop environment? KDE has KBiff. Mozilla and
Thunderbird have New Mail Icon notifier <  http://moztraybiff.mozdev.org/ >,
which works officially in GNOME, KDE, IceWM and maybe a few more
WM's/desktop environments. Are you using Evolution perhaps? I am not aware
of SuSE's packing in GNONE, but Evolution comes with Ubuntu (GNOME).
