If the OP uses KDE, this can be automatically generated by Konqeror (-> Tools
-> Create imgae gallery -> lots of options there). Visit the directory which
contains the images and slice them as desired beforehand. This widget exists
in KDE 3.1, but Blinky the Shark seems to suggest it is gone in some distros
(I used SUSE at the time and he was on Mandrake 9.2 with KDE 3.1 as well).

YMMV. I'd go for a simpler option.
