This makes for a good "sound-bite" but anyone willing to do the math
will see that this statement is simply inaccurate. Microsoft is buying
back about $40 billion worth of stock between now and June 30th, 2011.
This amounts to a total of 1.5% of outstanding shares over the next 5
years. Hardly enough to move or prop-up the stock price.

On the average day there are well over 60-millions shares of MSFT
traded. It is consistently one of the top-10 traded stocks (volume
wise). If this were a thinly traded stock then the buy-back program
would have an effect on stock price. But with the heavy trading volume
buying back 1.5% of outstanding shares over a period of 5-years won't
do much to affect the stock price.
