There are many PhD's who are morons, me included*. Their credentials are
meaningless to me. So should be mine to yours. I could have chosen a route
in industry 3 years ago when I graduated, rather than apply for a PhD in
Cambridge and Manchester. What is a PhD anyway? It's like 3 years in
industry, but rather than get a good pay, you get a piece of paper for...
/something/. Society is trying to elevate certain people by appending or
prepending ACRONYMs to names. Even people who spend a few years in dental
school or rubbing people's backs are finally named "doctor". Does that mean
that their opinions should be magnified? For what it's worth, the author of
the rebuttal is a fairly admired person who understands computing. All that
Harvard 'businessfolks' know are figures, models, and people. But computers
are made up from different ingredients. How convenient it is to make cheese
out of mutton.
*Heck, this includes senior professors whom I have come across, but I will
not name names.
