I was one of those downloads. Several weeks ago, after having some
difficulty with Debian DVD's, decided to give edubuntu on CD a second
shot on the Linux partition. I am not a Gnome fan, but I like the way
they implemented Gnome.
Several days ago, I got a prompt from their download updater that
there was a full upgrade available. 770 megabytes and two hours
later, now I am running edubuntu's Feisty. That was the smoothest
upgrade I have ever encountered.
Ubuntu has one thing going for it. It simply works. It is such a
joy, that I use it for most of my tasks now.
OTOH, a few days ago, I got problems logging into my yahoo E-mail
account in Windows XP. My password doesn't work. Next, I get a Yahoo
pop-up asking me for a credit card to validate my Yahoo account? Huh?
I shut down and boot to edubuntu. Log in to Yahoo was uneventful and
I immediately changed my password. Now I use edubuntu to do most of
my net browsing and business.
I downloaded the latest Symantec virus definitions on XP and ran with
all stops out. It says there's no virus, but I am unassured. Even
with a competent virus checker and personal firewall, life is no
longer safe in XP. I certainly won't be doing any more net purchases
with credit cards or banking in XP; it is too risky.
