Remember, Microsoft used OpenGL before they introduced DirectX 3D
graphics. According to Microsoft, DirectX was better and faster, yet
OpenGL is a widely supported standard used in military simulation
technologies, as well as numerous other 3D graphics systems including
CAD/CAM systems. OpenGL was first introduced by Silicon Graphics as
an alternative to PHIGS.
