About as useful a conclusion as concluding that all
Winvocates are useless bloody raving loonies.
Of course, it's obvious that *some* Winvocates *are* in
fact useless bloody raving loonies. These are the ones
who can't figure out vi (at least, the rudiments thereof,
anyway; vi does have quite a bit of functionality), who
haven't a clue as to how or where to type in the command
'ls -l', and who can't read a small C program to save
themselves; they just relax, push the buttons, and hope
that the blinkylights don't blink too fast.
(Be careful. The blinkylights might bite.)
And, to be fair, some Linvocates have, one might say,
a unique perspective shared by no other poster. Certainly
'7' qualifies as one whose sense of humor is well off the
beaten path, though given Microsoft's behavior in the past
one might forgive him. 'chrisv' is pithy. Roy loves to
dig up articles. I'm probably way too verbose.
And then there's the wandering n00b, who occasionally comes
into COLA asking for help. Hopefully we can direct him
gently to the right places, and have him answering the
right questions. Trouble is that the casual lurker has to
distinguish between the truly n00by (to coin a term) from
the wayward troll who merely wants to confuse the issue by
claiming that (pick one):
- Linux doesn't support all hardware because it doesn't support
my very esoteric (sound|video|RAID|lab|radio|??!?) setup.
- Linux can't possibly do that! (If one's lucky, "that" is
explained somewhere.)
- Linux can't be bothered to support the "standard" Windows file
formats such as Microsoft Word.
- OpenOffice is a bloated porker. (It is a bit big, but there's
a lot in there, and some of it is because of Microsoft quirks.
Personally, I prefer a mix of XML, XSL, and CSS. I like LyX
for math typesettings; MathML is a little strange.)
- Linux destroyed my (monitor|microprocessor|hard drive|Windows
data partition|Windows|document|speakers|laptop|desktop|
battery|breadmaker|car|mobile phone|house|spare light bulbs|
interstellar drive prototype unit I happened to, erm, liberate
from Beta Antares IV).
- Where's the BSOD? There was supposed to be a system-shattering
BSOD...
- Can I infect my system using a single click? Can I? Huh? C'mon,
everyone else is doing it. It's really simple on Windows.
- Help! I've moved /etc/ to a different partition and now Linux
won't boot! [*]
- Windows Vista will take over the world. (With our luck, it will,
but hopefully Linux will go down fighting.)
- Windows Vista can do anything like beautiful (DX10|applications|
transparency|market share|gizmos|UAC security|highly sophisticated
firewalling|INNOVA~1 features|ability to cook one's breakfast|
retrieve the working interstellar drive prototype units from Beta
Antares IV, leaving the non-working ones to blow up or something).

sure I really want them to try harder though.)
[*] This *has* happened, though not on Linux. We never did get the
MIPS machine functional again, AFAIK. Nowadays a Livedisc would
easily assist in the repair.
[+] Lurker's Eyes Glaze Over. Not to be confused with a certain
Danish toy manufacturer. ;-) Well, OK, maybe a little.
