My Christmas wish: more open source for everyone (and an ultralight Macbook for
me)

,----[ Quote ]
| I haven’t posted to this blog for a few weeks. Mostly because I’ve been
| slammed at work trying to help stabilize our Oracle Portal system that kept
| crashing every few days. We appear to have gotten a handle on it, after
| spending a ton of time and money. But this experience has led me to my
| Christmas wish for every programmer around the world: more open source.
|
| See the biggest problem we had was that we couldn’t get a handle on exactly
| what was breaking. In fact it appears we had a bunch of little problems, all
| of them adding up to a system that wasn’t stable and could get pushed over
| the edge from a variety of sources.

Open Letter to RWJ, PeaceHealth and Shared Care Plan

| In short, it is not a Free/Open Source software license as defined by the
| Free Software Foundation http://fsf.org or the Open Source Initiative
| http://opensource.org. Because of this licensing deficiency, it is my opinion
| that this is an impediment to interoperability, privacy, security and
| furthering the goals of Health Information Technology: better, safer care at
| a lower cost. Goals that your organizations likely share. I believe licensing
| the software under Free/Open Source licenses would benefit PeaceHealth/Shared
| Care Plan patients and many others. I specifically recommend the GNU General
| Public License (GNU GPL) for this software.

There is value in source code, whether you want it or not

,----[ Quote ]
| A common question you hear from proprietary vendors when dismissing open
| source alternatives is “how many customers actually want access to the code
| anyway?” It is a question I put to an open source software vendor myself
| earlier this week while playing devil’s advocate.

| Some of the former supporters were acquired, some fizzled out, and some lost
| interest. No doubt the same things will happen to come of the current
| supporters over time, while new supporters will emerge. Thanks to the code
| being open, the PostgreSQL project will carry on regardless.

Microsoft Muscles the NYS Legislature

| Microsoft’s proposed change to state law would effectively render

Police Blotter: Defendant wins breathalyzer source code

,----[ Quote ]
| What became central to the dispute was whether the source code was owned by
| the state or CMI, the maker of the Intoxilyzer.
|
| Minnesota's original bid proposal that CMI responded to says that "all right,
| title, and interest in all copyrightable material" that CMI creates as part
| of the contract "will be the property of the state." The bid proposal also
| says CMI must provide "information" to be used by "attorneys representing
| individuals charged with crimes in which a test with the proposed instrument
| is part of the evidence," which seems to include source code.

The Future of Elections: Open Source Voting

,----[ Quote ]
| But how would you feel if Microsoft Windows was powering the voting booth in
| which you were to select important elected officials? Would you, knowing of
| Microsoft's past security record, feel confident that using this OS and not
| being allowed to inspect the code, feel safe knowing that these machines
| could very well help to dictate the future of your perspective countries?
| Don't feel guilty, I don't really like it either.
